FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Expansion of Services for Substance Abuse Detoxification

July 12, 2002

The Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation is expanding its services for residential substance abuse detoxification.

Detoxification services are designed to assist addicted clients in and through the withdrawal process. Currently, an addicted person can pursue these services from a number of hospitals, government, and private sources.

Opportunities are fewer, however, for clients who lack insurance or who lack the personal financial means to afford treatment.

The funding, of approximately $200,000, provides additional beds for residential detoxification services through qualified community providers.

This expansion is a step toward making detoxification services more accessible to this needy population.
