Dr. Ed Richardson, Superintendent of Alabama Public Schools,
and Commissioner Kathy Sawyer, Alabama Department of Mental
Health and Mental Retardation have jointly endorsed a new
and innovative curriculum for Alabama’s middle, junior, and
senior high schools’ health educators. One in five
Alabamians will come face to face with the problems
associated with mental illness. “Breaking the Silence” is a
curriculum developed by the National Alliance for the
Mentally Ill (NAMI) which offers a current and creative
approach to instruction regarding mental illness. We want
our children to know warning signs such as: (1) unexplained
changes in mood, personality, or energy; (2) social
isolation; (3) irrational anxiety or fear; (4) bizarre
behavior or speech; and others.
The Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation in
conjunction with NAMI Alabama will be hosting a training of
trainers session on Tuesday, September 24th at the School of
Discovery Library in Selma, Alabama. This three-hour session
will begin at 9:00 a.m.
