The Second Charley Pell Memorial Golf Tournament is underway
at the Ol’ Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The
Tournament was established in honor of Charley Pell who is
best known for his successes as a football player and
collegiate coach. He was a member of the University of
Alabama undefeated national championship football team in
1961, and during his coaching legacy built three national
championship programs at Jacksonville State University,
Clemson University, and the University of Florida. He was
also named “Coach of the Year” by both the ACC and the SEC
in all conferences in which he coached. Following the
onset of a mental illness, during his recovery Coach Pell
became an advocate for persons with mental illness and
served on the Advisory Board of Trustees for the Department
of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. Celebrities slated
to play in the tournament are Lee Roy Jordan, Ray Perkins,
Tommy Booker, Cotton Clark, Curtis Crenshaw, Randy
Billingsley, Carlton Rankin, Don Salls, Charles Pell, Jr.,
and Richard Gianinni, Athletic Director at Southern
Mississippi. Celebrities will participate with foursomes
from the public. All proceeds benefit the adolescent center
at Bryce Hospital in Tuscaloosa.
