The Second Charley Pell Memorial Golf Tournament is underway at the Ol’ Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Tournament was established in honor of Charley Pell who is best known for his successes as a football player and collegiate coach. He was a member of the University of Alabama undefeated national championship football team in 1961, and during his coaching legacy built three national championship programs at Jacksonville State University, Clemson University, and the University of Florida. He was also named “Coach of the Year” by both the ACC and the SEC in all conferences in which he coached.

Following the onset of a mental illness, during his recovery Coach Pell became an advocate for persons with mental illness and served on the Advisory Board of Trustees for the Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. Celebrities slated to play in the tournament are Lee Roy Jordan, Ray Perkins, Tommy Booker, Cotton Clark, Curtis Crenshaw, Randy Billingsley, Carlton Rankin, Don Salls, Charles Pell, Jr., and Richard Gianinni, Athletic Director at Southern Mississippi. Celebrities will participate with foursomes from the public. All proceeds benefit the adolescent center at Bryce Hospital in Tuscaloosa.
