September 24, 2002 marked the first in a series of training
sessions for school officials regarding the use of the
“Breaking the Silence” curriculum. This curriculum was
developed by NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill).
The course is age appropriate, science-based and medically
up-to-date in its instruction regarding mental illness. One
curricula kit features material for junior high/middle
school age students. A second kit contains more advanced
materials for high school students. “Breaking the Silence”
helps students to be more aware of symptoms of mental
illness in themselves and others and the course encourages
them to seek help from responsible adults when symptoms are
evident. |
Health educators in junior and senior high schools, as well as public school nurses, convened at the School of Discovery in Selma, Alabama to hear informative and moving presentations. Twenty-six educators representing fourteen west Alabama school systems participated in the three-hour long session. This number included the host, Selma City Schools Superintendent, Dr. James Carter, and Dallas County Superintendent, Wayne May. Teachers may receive a free kit by calling the Office of Public Information at (334) 242-3417. . |
