MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Department of Mental Health and
Mental Retardation is urging the public to participate in
National Alcohol Screening Day on April 10, 2003. The event
will offer individuals free, anonymous screening for
alcohol-related problems at locations such as malls,
hospitals, and colleges throughout Alabama. |
“Most of us are not aware that our drinking patterns are potentially problematic because we don’t know what the warning signs are.” said Kent Hunt, Alabama DMH/MR Associate Commissioner for Substance Abuse Services. “Participation in the National Alcohol Screening Day is an excellent non-invasive, non-threatening, and free way to be introduced to information that could save your life or the life of someone you love.” The program, sponsored by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and Screening for Mental Health, Inc., is designed to promote public awareness about the consequences of at-risk drinking and alcohol’s effect on general health. The program also addresses alcohol’s effect on specific medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer as well as alcohol’s harmful interactions with medications. Participants of National Alcohol Screening Day are encouraged to complete a questionnaire about their alcohol use, and will have the opportunity to talk to a health professional. Those who are concerned about a family member’s alcohol use are also invited to get advice and information on treatment, intervention, and other support options. To find a screening site in Alabama, call the National Alcohol Screening Day locator line at 1-800-405-9200 or search for a site online at www.NationalAlcoholScreeningDay.org. RESOURCES
