Montgomery – September 2003 marks the 14th annual National
Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. In September
communities nationwide will join together to help people
recognize that alcohol and drug addiction is a treatable
disease, and that recovery treatment is as effective as it
is for other chronic conditions such as diabetes and high
blood pressure. The purpose of Recovery Month is to
promote the message of recovery, applaud the courage of
people in recovery, and recognize the contributions of
treatment providers. This year’s theme is “Join the Voices
for Recovery: Celebrating Health.” A special emphasis will
be given to the problems associated with co-occurring
disorders. Co-occurring disorders can further complicate a
person’s treatment and recovery.
The Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental
Retardation Substance Abuse Services Division will hold a
“Celebration of Recovery” forum every Friday at the RSA
Union building in Montgomery (see details below). The
general public is invited to these forums to hear
testimonies from experts and individuals who are
experiencing healthy recovery.
Substance abuse recovery groups are encouraged to
establish similar events or activities in their communities
during the month of September. SAMHSA has provided a limited
amount of kits designed to help plan and organize such
events or activities. Kits can be acquired by calling (334)
242-3961 or visiting SAMHSA’s web page at
www.recoverymonth.gov
and download your kit.
Individuals and families in recovery are a true testament
of the positive impact of treatment and these forums are
planned to give them the chance to celebrate recovery.
