| Governor Riley has released a 6.5
million-dollar conditional appropriation to the Alabama Department of
Mental Health and Mental Retardation. “The Governor has helped us begin
to reduce the waiting list for mental retardation services, just as he
promised,” said John Houston Commissioner of the department. He is also
aware of the fact that this is a beginning and that more help is needed
to substantially diminish the waiting list.”
Commissioner Houston went on to say, “Both the Governor and the
Legislature have demonstrated compassion for people with mental
disabilities in the past. Serving all the people on the waiting list
will continue to be a priority.” Houston explained, “3.5 million of the
appropriation will be used to provide services for a portion of the
families on the waiting list. The remaining funds will be used to pay
for services already in place in the FY06 budget and other critical
needs.
