MONTGOMERY – Department of Mental Health & Mental Retardation Commissioner Kathy Sawyer today lauded her department’s Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI) for their participation in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

The Torch Run encourages law enforcement officials across Alabama to help raise money and awareness for Special Olympics and related activities. This year’s Law Enforcement Torch Run Outstanding Service award went to BSI in recognition of its volunteer activities and hard work on behalf of Special Olympics.

"Our investigators work tirelessly day in and day out to protect the individuals we serve. Their job is difficult and can be emotionally demanding, yet they worked very hard to support the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics," Sawyer said. "I am so proud they have been recognized for their strong commitment to the community."

BSI sold t-shirts to raise funds for the event and sponsored one of its investigators, Ed Wright, as a torchbearer. "The BSI could not have participated in this wonderful event without the full support of the DMH/MR and Commissioner Kathy Sawyer," said BSI Director Richard Koerner. "We are happy that our efforts made a difference. This event proves that our investigators and our employees are deeply devoted to the mission of their work."
